Jacques Pirenne received his MD diploma, PhD diploma and surgical training at the University of Liege, Belgium. He then specialized in transplant surgery at the University of Minnesota, USA. He obtained a MS degree in experimental surgery at that University. He then moved to Birmingham, UK where he became senior lecturer in transplant surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. In 1997 he was recruited  in Leuven to develop a new department for liver, kidney, pancreas, intestinal and multivisceral transplantation. He  has authored or co-authored 280 manuscripts on these topics.
